It was my entire operating system. ⁓ was raising two boys, growing a business and spending money I did not have yet. What nobody knew, not one person. was that I could not afford my lifestyle. I walked around like a slogan that said, that girl has made it. The reality was I was not the person people thought I was. night, ⁓ friend wanted to celebrate. Good news, his good news. ⁓ restaurant, we had a deal. We were good friends. We alternated paying This was ⁓ turn. He ordered Veuve then appetizers, then looked at the menu like a man with no internal calculator running whatsoever. And I smiled. I laughed at the right moments. I was warm and present and completely composed. I was doing the math, fast, ⁓ humiliating math. The champagne, the apps. the tip I would have to leave because I would rather dissolve than look cheap. and re-adding while my face said, ⁓ this wonderful? That is not debt. That is performance. And performance is exhausting in a way compound interest cannot even touch. Is this you? Are you picking up tabs because you have it? Wrapped in a pretend nonchalance as though you have it and you have it all. My life was one credit card bill. I paid Peter and not Juan. I was divorced woman with two kids still lived like she had money in her pants. And I was good at it. But we are past 50, which means we are past pretending. Let's be the women who stop hiding in what was and show up exactly as we are. Not perfect, not caught up, not finished, just honest and ready. No guilt, no excuses. Ready to set things right. The Federal Reserve's 2024 data puts the average credit card interest rate above 21%. If you are carrying $8,000 and paying minimums, you are handing over more than $1,600 a year just to stay exactly where you are. other studies found that 28 % of people with debt have discussed it openly with someone close to them. Women over 50. are among the least likely to disclose. The secret is not protecting you, it is costing you differently than the debt is. And here is what actually moves things. Write them down, write the full picture, every balance. Every account, one list, one total. Saturday morning, let's have coffee. Say the number out loud, not to fix it, just to stop hiding from yourself. Then tell one person, not for advice, just to break that seal. The friend who has been through something hard and came out honest. Say it, simply say it. I've been carrying some debt. and I haven't talked about it. I don't need advice.
